This Ukon Numo cloth is used to wrap a chawan inside a kiribako. It is also used when using a box for chaire or other items.
In Japan, ukon-nuno (lit. turmeric cloth) has traditionally been used to wrap antique crafts since turmeric is considered to avoid worms and insects.
